ABOUT THE PAINTED TURTLE 

For 20 years, The Painted Turtle (TPT) has delivered the joy and wonder of Camp to over 200,000 children with serious illnesses and their families through year-round, life-changing and medically safe camp experiences provided completely free of charge at the 173-acre Campsite in North Los Angeles County, through hospitals across California, and in communities where campers live. TPT’s programs inspire children to try new things and Camp outcomes demonstrate the positive impact that a Painted Turtle experience has on a camper’s sense of confidence, independence, belonging, and medical compliancy.  

The Painted Turtle is a member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network, founded by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman. The Network’s 30 camps and programs are considered the world’s finest multi-disease medical camps and programs and to date, have delivered over 1,700,000+ camp experiences to children and families throughout five continents and in over 50 countries. Additionally, for the second year in a row, out of tens of thousands of Camps across the US, The Painted Turtle is listed in the top 500 Best Summer Camps by Newsweek for 2023: America's Best Summer Camps 2023 (newsweek.com)   

Entering the third decade, TPT is guided by a three-year strategic plan launched in 2023 with a bold vision to bring the magic of Camp to as many children with serious medical conditions and their families as possible. Building on the solid foundation created in the first two decades, TPT is in the midst of an ambitious growth campaign to reach $7.5 million in revenue by 2026 to ensure that Camp is always free for the campers and families served.   

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Salary range is $110,000 - $150,000/year  

  • Hybrid position – Three or four days in the Santa Monica office per week

POSITION OVERVIEW 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will join The Painted Turtle (TPT) at an exciting time as TPT enters the third decade with ambitious plans to grow the camper base and annual budget from $5.8 million in 2024 to $7.5 million by 2026.    

The Director of Development (Director) will lead and inspire a team of enthusiastic fundraisers across individual giving, grants, corporate giving, events, and The Painted Turtle Camp Store. The Director will oversee the design and implementation of all fundraising strategies and activities for the organization and work with members of the leadership team to achieve goals and milestones established in The Painted Turtle 2023-2025 Strategic Plan. The Director will also play a key role in Board of Directors development, engagement, and succession planning.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS 

The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director. Direct reports include the Annual Giving Manager, Events Manager, Associate Director of Foundations and Corporations, and Development Coordinator. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Strategic Planning and Leadership 

  • Collaborate with the Director of Strategy to develop annual department strategies, objectives, and metrics in alignment with the strategic plan 

  • Design and lead implementation of The Painted Turtle’s annual fundraising program               

  • Develop annual fundraising priorities and secure organizational-wide support for the priorities that include annual unrestricted support, specific program or session support, endowed gifts, planned gifts, capital projects, new facilities, facility maintenance, and camp improvements 

  • Present annual fundraising goals and progress against goals to the Board of Directors   

  • Create and drive implementation of a Board of Directors development and succession plan in collaboration with the Executive Director, Board Chairperson, and current Board of Directors 

  • Model a spirit of cross department collaboration by spending time at Camp, in hospitals with the Outpost Team, and in the Santa Monica office 

  • Engage with the support team at SeriousFun and at Camps across the network to learn and adopt best practices to improve TPT operations and programs 

Team Management 

  • Manage, inspire, mentor, and support the development team which includes an Annual Giving Manager, Events Manager, Associate Director, Foundations and Corporations, and Development Coordinator 

  • Cultivate a team culture of continuous improvement through daily monitoring and analyzing of fundraising data to evaluate performance and adjust strategies as needed 

Fundraising 

  • Cultivate, steward, and maintain a portfolio of top tier donors and prospects 

  • Engage prospective donors through Camp tours & visits, meetings, phone calls, events, personalized emails, and correspondence 

  • Drive continuous stewardship of donors, coordinating with appropriate board, volunteer, and staff members  

Technology and Reporting 

  • Develop a plan to streamline technology and ensure continuous data hygiene, list management, and efficient/accurate gift processing 

  • Lead team is use of CRM/Raiser’s Edge as a daily tool for all fundraising activities 

  • Track donor engagement and retention rates, analyze revenue streams and make data driven decisions to achieve fundraising goals 

  • Monitor department revenue and expenses on an ongoing basis  

COMPETENCIES 

  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising strategy, planning, and leadership 

  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing direct reports across varied roles and fundraising disciplines 

  • Ability to influence and engage sophisticated and savvy donors and establish long‐term relationships 

  • Demonstrated success collaborating with board members 

  • Experience managing a major gifts portfolio while managing staff 

  • Strong moves management experience 

  • Proven success securing foundation and corporate gifts 

  • Experience designing and executing an annual giving program 

  • Understanding of planned giving best practices 

  • Experience managing special events 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)  

  • Exceptional communication skills, including writing, research and presenting 

  • Experience managing digital fundraising campaigns 

  • Knowledge of the Los Angeles fundraising landscape with preferred experience in health sciences 

  • Knowledge of donor database management; preferably Raiser’sEdge 

  • Bachelor's degree preferred 

  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends as needed
