ABOUT NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS SAN MATEO COUNTY (NAMI SMC)
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a grassroots organization of families and individuals whose lives have been affected by serious mental illness. NAMI advocates for lives of quality and respect, without discrimination and stigma, for all our constituents. NAMI provides leadership in advocacy, legislation, policy development, education, and support throughout California.
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) San Mateo County (SMC) was founded in 1974 as the Parents of Adults with Schizophrenia. The organization was subsequently renamed the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of San Mateo County, until its reformation in 1979 as the National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI SMC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) exempt organization governed by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of family members who have a loved one with a mental illness and other interested parties involved in the local mental health community. As an independently operating nonprofit, NAMI San Mateo County receives no funding from NAMI National nor NAMI California.

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS
Salary range: $125,000-$135,000

POSITION OVERVIEW
National Alliance on Mental Illness, San Mateo County (NAMI SMC) seeks a tenacious, visionary, and dynamic leader to guide the organization toward the future. The Executive Director is responsible for leading, managing, and collaborating with the internal team, Board of Directors and other stakeholders to address the deficiency in mental health awareness and resources in the San Mateo County community.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and manages a team of four direct reports.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership + Management
Develop an operational plan to work towards our strategic and vision goals.
Ensure operation of the organization meets the needs and expectations of its clients, Board, and funders.
Oversee planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s programs, services and special projects in line with the organization’s mission and will of the Board of Directors.
Establish productive working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve our goals.
Financial Planning + Fundraising
Communicate with funders and members to keep them informed of the work of the organization and identify changing needs in the community we serve.
Collaborate with staff and Board Treasurer to prepare a comprehensive budget and secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization.
Ensure that nonprofit bookkeeping/accounting procedures are followed and required tax and other filings are submitted.
Participate in fundraising activities as appropriate.
Administration + Human Resources
Oversee efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization.
Identify, assess, and inform the Board of internal and external issues that affect the organization.
Ensure secure storing of all personnel, client, donor and volunteer information, maintaining privacy/confidentiality where appropriate.
Foster successful teamwork between the Board, staff and volunteers.
Modify talent resources as needed by recruiting, interviewing and hiring qualified team members.
Engage in proactive coaching and mentoring of staff in service of a healthy internal culture
COMPETENCIES
5 or more years of progressive management experience in a nonprofit, or prior ED experience in a nonprofit
Comprehensive knowledge of mental Illness
Passionate about the mission of NAMI and its programs
Bachelor's Degree required in a relevant field
Ability to convey and communicate a vision of the future of NAMI to staff, board, volunteers, and donors
Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the non-profit sector
Ability to create a collaborative environment to motivate board and committee members, partners, community members, staff, and volunteers
Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to tailor to the audience
Strong organizational and operations skills
Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups
Must be comfortable working with people with all abilities
