ABOUT CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA 

Celebrating nearly three decades of providing support, education and hope to people fighting cancer and their families, the Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area (CSC) is the local affiliate of the leading provider of social and emotional support for cancer patients in the United States. Cancer Support Community nationally includes policy leadership and support, a research and training institute and a network of 45 local affiliates and over 130 additional service delivery locations.  

CSC is an independently governed and funded non-profit organization which serves approximately 2,000 individuals each year with a variety of programs including support groups led by mental health professionals for cancer patients and their families, healthy lifestyle/wellness classes, cancer education seminars, social and networking programs, all of which are provided at no cost to participants to attend. Our service territory includes Contra Costa and Alameda Counties with expansion plans throughout the SF Bay Area.  

CSC is currently engaged in a capital campaign with $22.1M secured funding to date. Ground-breaking on CSC’s state-of-the-art cancer support and digital technology center is expected in November 2024.

POSITION OVERVIEW 

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for the organization's pursuit of its mission and strategic objectives including but not limited to growing the organization in size and reach and overseeing and managing the building of its new facility in Lafayette. 

Cancer Support Community is a strong and vibrant organization with dedicated volunteers, highly skilled staff, solid finances and philanthropic support. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build upon the great foundation of current leadership and expand CSC’s outreach and services. The successful candidate will be an accomplished fundraiser and enjoy leading a team who is passionate about ensuring that anyone whose life is affected by cancer and seeks CSC’s help is able to receive it. With a current budget of $3M, the Board is looking to the next CEO to substantially grow the budget over the next few years in order to achieve the ambitious goals of CSC. Evaluating the feasibility of technology to further CSC’s services, while not losing the personal touch that is a hallmark of CSC’s care and support, will be part of the vision for the future. 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS 

This position reports to the Board of Directors. The CEO has six direct reports (Director of Clinical Programs, Director of Education & Outreach, Director of Donor Support, Director of Operations & Finance, Director of Communications and Director of Events), seven therapist facilitators, five therapist interns and more than 25 instructors.     

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS  

  • Salary range is $225,000 - $250,000 plus annual bonus

YOU ARE 

  • A seasoned nonprofit executive who has dedicated their career to healthcare, and preferably has experience working with cancer patients, families of patients and survivors 

  • A skillful and determined fundraiser who is gifted at building, sustaining, and growing relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and other stakeholders   

  • Passionate about and highly motivated by the opportunity to deliver support services to cancer patients and their families 

  • Someone who possesses a growth mindset and embodies strategic and analytical thinking

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Strategy and Vision 

  • Articulate and implement a plan to grow the organization, using the strategic plan as a guide 

  • Build aggressive models to support financial stability and growth 

  • Evaluate the feasibility of incorporating technology to increase access to services and support in order to evolve the mission  

  • Cultivate strong and transparent working relationships with the Board of Directors and ensure open communication around CSC’s operations and performance toward goals 

  • Work within the guidelines of the existing strategic plan while laying the groundwork for the future 

  • Create with intention an organizational culture that attracts, retains, motivates, and develops a diverse and high-quality staff 

  • Implement systems for reporting on progress toward strategic goals, as defined by the Board 

  • Serve as the leading spokesperson for CSC

Organizational Leadership and Management 

  • Manage, lead, and develop staff, volunteers, and contractors 

  • Encourage staff self-care and professional development 

  • Ensure operations and programs are professionally and efficiently organized and administered 

  • Ensure administration of contracts, including compliance with relevant employment laws and other legal requirements 

  • Serve as a compelling spokesperson for CSC’s vision, strategy and programs among board, staff, volunteers, donors and other key stakeholders and the community at large 

  • Oversee all programmatic, operational, facility, financial, and fundraising activities of the organization 

  • Foster an organizational culture of results, learning, innovative thinking, responsibility, and accountability 

  • Promote a collaborative, positive and safe work environment for employees and volunteers 

  • Work with the Board of Directors and CSC team to develop and execute a strategic plan and report on performance metrics 

  • Represent CSC at numerous community events  

Capital Project (Lafayette campus) 

  • Complete capital campaign 

  • Manage and oversee building of new Lafayette campus 

  • Lead new program creation while supporting current program growth 

Fiscal Management 

  • Develop, manage and monitor organizational budget in partnership with the Board of Directors 

  • Strategically link revenues and resource allocation to expand the organization 

  • Present financial and organizational progress reports to the Board of Directors 

Fundraising 

  • In collaboration with the Development Director and Board of Directors, build and execute a robust and dynamic outreach and relationship-building program that attracts donors, members, volunteers and community support 

  • Deepen and expand relationships with diverse funding sources, including foundations, corporations, and individual donors 

  • Manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects 

  • Work with Development team to grow planned giving program 

  • Involvement in grant writing, donor communication and event management.  

  • Foster a strong sense of community and related strategies to generate financial support 

  • Build relationships and support within the medical community for partnership and support  

COMPETENCIES

Experience: 

  • Ten or more years of managerial and operational experience, including problem solving, fundraising and financial experience as an executive in a nonprofit organization 

  • Five plus years of experience in a senior management role, including staff management of 30+ direct/indirect reports and budgetary accountability of at least $2M budget 

  • Proven fundraising abilities; demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit and steward relationships with individuals, corporations and institutions and leverage those relationships for broader support 

  • Accomplished major gift solicitor of five- and six-figure gifts and capital campaign experience 

  • Track record of inspiring volunteers and employees with development and retention of staff 

  • Demonstrated track record of implementing growth strategies that could include mergers, organic growth, focused program changes and new services 

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills 

  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines and balance multiple projects 

  • Strong financial management and analytical skills 

  • Visionary, creative, and entrepreneurial abilities 

  • Ability to plan and execute on specific metrics to achieve development goals 

  • Strong relationship builder with members, families, caregivers, donors, advocates and professionals with different backgrounds 

  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred, with master’s degree or higher desired 

  • Commitment and demonstrated passion for cancer members, family, and caregivers 

  • High degree of emotional intelligence, humility and drive 

Preferred: 

  • Lived experience with cancer a plus 

  • Previous Executive Director/CEO experience
